Claims involving public entities move on a different clock

An injury involving a city, county, state agency, public employee, public roadway, or government property may be subject to special claim-presentation rules before a lawsuit can be filed. In many California injury matters, the initial written government claim deadline can be much shorter than the ordinary filing period.

The correct public entity is not always obvious. We evaluate who owned, controlled, designed, or maintained the property or activity at issue and what notices, reports, or records may establish the claim. Prompt review is especially important.
